Healthier Yester year and the sombre today!

I was reading this nice post here on how important cooking is in our lives and what an important role healthy food plays in determining our health. What we should be reminded is that we are in a fast paced world and sometimes it is unavoidable to eat the junk. Well I guess thats why we need to have a balance between what we eat and how we exercise. At the end of that post there was a question of why the yesteryear generation was more healthy, is it the healthier food alone that attributes to a person's well-being: I started thinking through it and instead of leaving a response there :) I penned down my thoughts on the same here:- let me know if you agree on these!
(Now the points mentioned may not go well with all cultures, but overall I tried to make a list of things that play an important role in deciding or affecting your health)

1. My father has been a strict vegetarian whole through his life, but still he is a diabetic - he doesnt eat junk food, no sweets either - which means certain things are passed down genetically! The traits of your hormones cannot be changed whatever good food you eat - agree?
2. We live in a world that is surrounded by pollution and increasing levels of hazards - all plants are grown fast to meet the demands and hence lot of fertilizers are used against the natural growth - the quality of food and life is affected and is not natural -agree?
3. Yesteryear people had more physical work to do - the daily chores starting from washing clothes to cleaning the house, or even travelling (mostly on foot) which gave them a equal proportion of physical work all day long in comparison of to the food they ate. We dont have all this thanks to the luxury and comfort of technology - washing machine to wash your clothes, housemaid to clean your house, and very easy ways to travel. It is important to be active with physical work whole day rather than 1-2 hrs of physical work - agree?
4. Our work envrionment is so tediously planned thanks to burning extra oil at night and all day sitting at the same place staring at the monitors - this has virtually reduced any further physical activity - a main factor why diseases crop up everyday like Carpel Tunnel Syndrome or Motor Neuron Disease.
5. Finally remeber its the sound mind and the sound body that go hand in hand together. We are mentally haunted by so many things that are not even trivial - these play a major hand in pulling your health down. Yester year generation was more sociable - sorry If I've to make a statement as this, being sociable is not just freaking out at parties and meeting ur neighbours occasionally - a daily walk with a group of your neighbours on a park or beach or even extending a friendly hand and warm smile to a new person in your locality can make you more sociable.

Remember, its ultimately you who can make this world more healthy - by changing yourself and eating sensibly first and I always remember Swami Vivekananda's words
'If you are poor, work. If you are rich, work. If you are burdened with un-seemingly unfair responsibilities, work. If disappointments come, work. If sorrow overwhelms you and loved ones seem not true, work. If health is threatened, work. When dreams are shattered and hope seems dead, work. Work as if your life is in peril. It really is. No matter what ails you, work. Work faithfully. Work in faith. Work is the great remedy available for both mental and physical afflictions'

prasanna,
thanks a lot for visiting my site and for having continued to think on the same lines..
i think each and every point for why the yesteryear people aren't affected is very valid. Though I want to say something else also as answer in my next post, I thought about all those points you mentioned which are very much intertwined with my thoughts(answer). But when i see them as points here in separate, it makes it more clear!!!
I could see clarity in your thoughts. I am glad that i got to visit a very sensible blogspot!!!
thanks again!!

Thought provoking post! You are bang on, on most fronts.

I guess work is important, but work is no eternal solution. A better solution would be balance. A balance in all what we do: Work. Food. Play. Love. Hobbies...its easier said than done ! But that will be great to have

Hey I completely agree and have also realised in the past 6 months how important it is to not take our health for granted! And indeed it is we who are responsible for our health..good or bad!

Hey,
Grt post!
Have realised how important it is to work on your body and respect it!!
We often tend to take out bodies for granted not realising that it is the biggest source of happiness or unhappiness!
Everytime I stop exercising I put on weight and this is my bodys way of reminding me to not take it for granted!
